View Full Version : Discipline Talent only - It works for me! Am i wrong?

I am currently a lvl29 priest and have invested all my talent points in Discipline. Having read other posts I wonder if I've missed something. In fairness, i've done no pvp-ing to date but I've had no problems doing solo quests and group instances/Dungeons.
In solo terms I can easily take out 2-3 npc's of similiar level simultaneously.

Generally I do the following when solo. Before I engage I have PW Fortitude (always on), PW Shield, Inner Fire and shadowguard active. Then I cast smite first (takes longest to cast and no monster is attacking while I do it). By the time the monster gets to me after smite hits, I will have also cast Mindblast and SW pain. I then use my wand to complement the SW Pain and shadowguard ongoing damage. If there are 2 or 3 bad guys, my pw shield is normally still active or just gone off by the time I kill the first one. Because I cast PW Shield 10 secs before I take the first hit I can normally recast it again before my health is more than a 1/4 down. Depending on whether the PW Shield is up or not I will either repeat the Smite, Mindbalst, PW Shield, wand combo on the next monster (if the shield isn't up I skip smite cos of the long cast time). As there's less guys attacking by the 2nd PW Shield cast I generally don't need it again. If things get tight, I just do a quick heal while killing the final guy.
Generally this tactic works really well although I'd struggle against more than two opponents who were more than 2-3 lvls above me. Would I struggle against them if I had more shadow oriented talents? Dunno!

In group instances. I normally drop a PW Shield onto the main attacker before he engages. IF things are getting sticky I'll drop a pw shield on whoever is being attacked by a higher number of creatures. This will protect my group member and draw one or two bad guys onto me. I'll cast a PW shield on myself as they approach. While my shield is up I will focus my attacking on whichever party member is being swamped then when the pw shield goes I click fade and the generally the monster loses interest in me and goes attack another party member.
Overall in instances I tend to simply heal and protect and use sw pain and wand saving my mana for healing/Shielding until I can see we have the upper hand then I join the attack. Although if there's an elite guy to attack the party generally send me in first (I use the same tactic then as soloing) although as the bad guy reaches me some of the heavy hitters in the group take him on and I get left alone. I cast a fade if there are a couple of guards with the elite to lose them too. This means the bad guy takes some hits and damage before the main group tanks engage and start to lose their pw shield i cast before the battle began.
Not sure of the rights and wrongs of these tactics but I generally don't run short of mana and it's not often I or when in a group, my group members, die! Obviously a good wand helps (try BlackFathomDeep if you're around my level for a decent wand (Gravestone Sceptre DPS29).
Has anyone else done this? Should I change to more shadow talents? Any views/hints/tips welcome.

I'd suggest going all shadow (or shadow/disc) until your upper lvl 50s.

Why?

Because a shadow priest pawns! If you love you priest now, just change your build and try it out. You can still be a great healer in the 20-50 lvl instances, plus you can do uber damage and other great things. Shadowform, and mindflay are amazing.

You dont need to pvp, or anything, just rock the house in as a shadow priest, I garentee you'll love it.
